Tangent // Volume 1
Curatorial Statement:
This collection brings together two artistic practices with distinct visual languages. Vik works through black-and-white street photography, situating the human figure within the rhythm, distance, and scale of the city.
Strakts works through digital abstraction, using brushwork, decimated 3D models, recomposed fragments, color, distortion, and controlled visual instability. The two practices begin from different points of contact. One starts from the street, the body, and the fragile choreography of urban life.
The other begins inside the image, where gesture, error, and digital matter push the figure toward uncertainty. What connects them is a shared interest in the human being as something that cannot be reduced to the sum of its parts.
For Strakts, the collaboration emerged from a sustained engagement with Vik’s work and his approach to street photography: a subtle discretion that leaves intimacy to the subject and space to the surrounding frame, a form of deliberate absence.
The two artists had the opportunity to discuss their practices during Brainwaves, the DAM Zine residency in 2024, where this dialogue began to take shape. Vik’s openness toward space, scale, and human presence offered the cue for a counterweight built through color, distortion, and abstract reconstruction.
The result is a hybrid artistic dialogue. Photography becomes material for transformation, while digital abstraction becomes a way of re-reading the human presence already embedded within the image.
