LOG 002 — FROM SIGNALING TO SEEING (March–June 2021)

I. After the First Signal Kreechures minted on March 26, 2021. People frame that as an origin point for Solana NFTs, and it is, sort of. The non-fungible part is there. The cultural part, not yet. In spring 2021, very few people had the tools, habits, or even the interface vocabulary to notice what was happening in real time.
 (Kreechures Docs) Kreechures did not “start a visual culture.” What they did, and it was pivotal, was prove that a chain built for throughput could still carry an artwork without intermediaries. That proof matters more than any later myth-making because it happened before the “comfort” layer existed. 
And the “comfort” layer was missing almost entirely. No standardized metadata protocol people relied on. No marketplace. No wallet behavior designed for browsing. No shared conventions for how an NFT should present itself as a digital object you can actually look at. 
The Kreechures docs mention the early pace plainly: the earliest Kreechures were “born on a schedule, every 15ish mins,” and the project names March 26, 2021 as Day 1. (Kreechures Docs) That cadence captures the atmosphere better than any retrospective timeline. Things appeared slowly and often to a small circle. If you blinked, you missed it. 
If you did not already know where to look, there was nothing to see here. Here is the most unromantic “nothing to see here.” An NFT could exist perfectly on-chain and still show up in a wallet or explorer as an “unknown token,” because the interface did not know how to resolve the identity and media behind the mint. 
It is an infrastructure issue. (Solana Labs GitHub) So the limited uptake around Kreechures is not best read as disinterest. It is better read as a missing mechanism for stabilizing attention. A small group of enthusiasts can be missionary about it all day. 
Without image accessibility and a consistent way to display what the chain is holding, you cannot realistically coagulate a wider public around it. The signal had been sent. The receiver was still being built. 
II. Solarians: “The Future is Glorious Beep Boop” 
A decisive shift comes in early April 2021 with Solarians by the artist FUX. This is not about “better” replacing “earlier.” 
It is about a different structural condition arriving: reiteration with variation at a scale that produces recognition. Solarians state it plainly. The first Solarian, “286-W The Flippant,” was minted on April 7, 2021, in a moment when “there wasn’t much information and tooling and the Metaplex Token Standard had not been created yet.” 
They describe a hand-written minting script interfacing with SPL-Token CLI tooling, with custom queuing and management logic. 
Some may feel dizzy reading beep boop slang, me included, just stating for the record. They also describe the generative structure: 1,800 unique robot parts, with outputs generated based on the on-chain information of the mint hash. (Solarians) 
This was not a modern landing-page mint experience, not by any present standards. It was closer to forcing a custom production line to run before the factory existed. Nevertheless, the job got done. 
This is where literal seeing becomes utilitarianism , and this act gifts the gift of “mass adoption,” meaning a few more eyes could see enough to recognize, remember, and re-identify an object across time. 
Solarians provided, for the first time on Solana, a corpus large enough and coherent enough to be apprehended relationally. That is the point. A field appears. III. From Singular Objects to Contextual Reference Once you have a field, context appears. Works stop existing alone. 
They start existing next to other works. They acquire meaning through proximity and comparison. The set produces its own internal references, and culture moves forward from there. This is also where the social layer starts to matter in a way that is hard to unsee once you have lived it. I did’t live it, but I saw it. I got to see it irl S/O @sp_Aceee and @soloMID_
. Micro-communities form because there is finally something consistent enough to gather around. Discord does what Discord does. Call them clans, hordes, guilds, circles. Shared objects create shared reference points, and reference points create belonging. 
Solarians’ own documentation preserves something else that is worth noting down in digital ink: projects were often built by distributed teams, not only one artist arting, but also devs and operators working in parallel. 
Solarians publicly list a “Team 1.0 (2021)” with roles spanning founder/advisor and multiple developers. (Solarians) And that is the point worth keeping in-frame. In 2021, making the work and making it show up as itself were still tangled together. 
Art direction, mint logic, and basic visibility all lived in the same room. At this stage, Solana NFT culture develops a short-term memory. Fragile, perhaps. Dependent on tools that still change quickly. But no longer purely ephemeral. PFP projects just became social condensers. 
They swap visual depth for immediate recognizability. They are worn, reiterated, and recognized. Different pixel animals allow groups to form before deeper interpretation catches up, and sometimes it spoils the fun. It is easy to judge this fast-paced PFP arms race, but if there is one thing that held up over time, it was this coagulation of passionate individuals. Resources, attention, coordination. Human capital, basically. 
It is one way an ecosystem learns how to gather. IV. Standardization as a Condition of Seeing Metaplex arrives in June 2021 as the first serious attempt to standardize how Solana NFTs describe themselves and how other systems can read them.

The simplest IRL analogy is a museum label system. Before labels, a banana can be taped to a wall and still fail to be encountered as fine art. People walk past it like it’s nothing. No title. No author. No context. No cue that you are supposed to stop in front of contemporary genius. 
Metaplex is the moment the labels become consistent. In practical terms, Metaplex Token Metadata introduces a standard “metadata account” that holds identity and attribution information, including creator arrays with a Verified attribute that tells the ecosystem whether a creator actually signed the asset. (Metaplex Developers) It is the difference between “this exists somewhere” and “this shows up as itself wherever you go.” 
You can see the before-state clearly in the Solana explorer issue from August 2021: “The explorer doesn’t support NFT details pages… this NFT just displays that it is an ‘unknown token’.” 
The suggested path forward is explicitly to use the Metaplex token-metadata spec to fetch and decode what should be displayed. (Solana Labs GitHub) That is Metaplex. The boring but pivotal role: standardization. Earlier works like Kreechures and Solarians can now be re-encountered, not merely verified. Same objects, same chain. Same history books.
